Idleholt

Changelog

Everything new in Holtgrove, newest first.

Skills guide: XP tables and unlocks

  • Fixed the yellow-roof house's beams poking through its window and door, and turned the gateway arches' supports the right way. Thanks for the reports!
  • The Kindlecross Hearth's fire burns low in its ring again, under the cooking pot instead of up through it, and still flickers.
  • Skill chains can now pick Best available: set any link to it and the chain fells, fishes, whittles, burns or roasts the best your level and tools allow. When you level up it moves up by itself and walks to the new trees, while you play and while you're away. A one-link chain is the quick way to just fish the best.
  • Shadows in Holtgrove are softer and cooler, and things sit properly on the ground.
  • Busy spots stay smooth: Holtgrove draws the players nearest to you in full and shows the rest as a +N over their tile.
  • New Graphics settings: Crowds (Auto, Few or Many) sets how many other players are drawn, and Name tags (Nearby, All or Off) sets whose names show. Chat bubbles always show.
  • Duskelm, Emberheart, Glimmer and Starroot logs can now be whittled into wren carvings and burned at the hearth.
  • On larger phones held upright, the side panel's tab names are bigger and easier to read: the tabs sit in two rows of three, each icon beside its name.
  • Joining the world while it briefly restarts now tries again on its own instead of failing.
  • The world now checks every step, so everyone is where they really are.
  • Start any skill from the Skills tab: pick a skill, then Fell, Carve, Burn, Fish or Roast what you want, and Stop it there. Your pack is now just your pack, with Bank, Stall and Look underneath.
  • New tool belt: every axe you own hangs on it, takes no pack space, and you always chop with the best one your Felling level allows. Cobblethorn's stall sells any axe your level allows, in any order, and buying a better one never takes your old ones. You can take a tool off the belt into your pack, bank it, and hang it back later. The three finest axes are rare and not sold at the stall.
  • Item and tab tooltips no longer close when you scroll elsewhere on the page, such as the chat. They still close when what they point at scrolls out of sight.
  • The side panel is tidier: its tabs are now small pixel icons with a bronze frame on the open one, and their names show when you hover, focus or hold them. Hover an item for what it is good for and what the stall pays (a long press on phones opens its menu), and hover a skill for the XP to its next level.
  • Every window and button now shares one look and feel: the bank, the stall, the character screen, the chain editor, the welcome-back card, the statue plaque, the suggestions box and the reconnecting screen. The character screen gains a Close button, and every button clicks when pressed.
  • Level ups now show as a short note at the bottom of the screen that clears itself, instead of a banner over the world. Tap it to clear it sooner. A sell trip's progress at the stall shows in the same style, with its Cancel.
  • Right-click anywhere in the world for a menu of everything under the pointer: Walk here, each thing's actions, and an Examine line for each. On a phone, press and hold for the same menu. When trees, players and the stall overlap, the menu lists them all.
  • New: Follow another player from their menu. You keep walking after them until you do something else or they leave.
  • The hearth's menu offers Burn logs and Roast, which use the best logs or fish in your pack.
  • A mini map now sits in the corner of the view: Holtgrove round you, north up, with the trees, the bank, the stall, you as a gold dot and everyone else as dots. Tap it to walk there. Four orbs around it show how full your pack is, how your skill chain is going, how many players are here, and whether you're connected. You can hide it in Settings, under Screen.

  • Holtgrove has sound effects: axes biting, logs into the pack, falling trees, footsteps that change on grass, paths, sand, the pier and the vault, splashes and sizzles, coins, a level-up fanfare, and soft clicks for buttons, tabs and windows. They follow your Effects and Interface volumes and mute.
  • Holtgrove now sounds like a place: wind with gusts, birds calling from the trees, the pond lapping as you near it, the murmur of trade by the stall, the hearth crackling louder or softer with its fire, and a quiet hall inside the bank. Other woodcutters' axes and footsteps sound where they stand and fade with distance, and a big crowd turns into a busy hum instead of a din. All of it follows your Ambience and Effects volumes and mute.
  • Holtgrove's trees have fuller, rounder crowns and their colours glow even in the shade.
  • Holtgrove's paths and pond are lined with bushes, ferns, flowers and cattails, and a new Graphics quality setting keeps older phones smooth.
  • The pond's water is clearer, with bright shallows and a soft shimmer.
  • Busy spots stay smooth: when a crowd gathers on one spot, only a few characters are drawn there and a small "+N" badge counts the rest. Anyone chatting is always drawn, so their words have a face.
  • Fixed the bar along the bottom of the game covering the side panel's buttons on a phone held sideways.
  • On a phone held sideways, the hide-all and full-screen buttons now sit beside the settings gear, clear of the side panel.
  • Every pack holds 30 slots again and Cobblethorn's stall no longer sells more; anything you kept in extra slots is waiting in your bank.
  • Added your ideas to the roadmap: chat that remembers, a clock for Holtgrove, and bank trips inside skill chains.
  • Patch notes now list only the changes you can see in the game.
  • The roadmap can now be dragged with a mouse or swiped with a finger, and shows more of what's coming, like homes of your own.
  • The female body has a new, curvier shape with bigger eyes, lashes and fuller lips, and every outfit is refitted to it.
  • Chat messages can now be up to 280 characters, and a long one over a player's head shows its start.
  • Recent public chat now stays when you reload the page, even the longest messages.
  • Holtgrove now keeps its own time: a small clock at the bottom of the game shows the time of day, and every chat message shows when it was said. A full day in Holtgrove lasts 24 minutes.
  • Added a count of players online and a Patch notes button to the bottom of the game.
  • Emotes now play on your woodcutter, who then carries right on chopping, whittling or walking.
  • Walking is smoother and can go diagonally, and tapping a tree or fishing spot sends you to that one.
  • On a computer, press \ to slide the side panel away and back. A Full screen button now sits by the settings gear and in Settings under Screen. On an iPhone it explains once how to add the game to your Home Screen.

  • The meadow's grass has softer, richer greens and the paths look properly worn in.
  • The character screen's body choice now reads Body type, with Male and Female.

  • The Kindlecross Hearth's fire now roars in tall flames above its stones and pools warm amber light on the grass, and its last embers send up a thin wisp of smoke.
  • The tiger on the Tigers statue now has its tail properly attached, in both bronze and plush.
  • Music settings now apply instantly, no reload needed.
  • The Kindlecross Hearth is now one shared fire: every log anyone burns keeps it going, anyone can roast over it while it's lit, and it slowly burns down and goes out if nobody tends it.
  • Holtgrove now basks in warm afternoon light with a soft haze in the distance.
  • Crisper colours on the Proving Pit's fence posts and the bank's timber frame.
  • On a phone, the inventory panel now drags anywhere, up, down and sideways, and all the way off the screen; its handle brings it back. One swipe up shows your whole pack, and a new Full screen button hides the browser's bars.

  • Six new music tracks, and a music selector in Settings > Sound: keep the music that fits where you are, shuffle through every track, or loop your favourite.
  • Holtgrove runs lighter: the world sends each update once for everyone, your game saves every few minutes and right after level ups, purchases and chain changes, and phones animate only the nearest players in view.
  • Added a Patch notes link at the bottom of the side panel. After an update, the newest notes open once so you can see what changed.
  • A road now leads west out of Holtgrove to the Proving Pit.
  • Settings switches are now clear on/off toggles.
  • Heading back to the fishing pier, you now walk straight to an open seat, and walk on to the next one if yours gets taken, instead of jumping across.
  • Walking to the bank from the fishing pier, or anywhere else, now goes around trees instead of straight through them.
  • Other players no longer get stuck walking in place or show up in the wrong spot, and you can now see when someone is whittling.
  • The mobile inventory panel is easier to open, drag, and use full screen. On a computer you can now tuck the side panel away, or press H to hide everything but the world.
  • The trailer's look at where Holtgrove is headed has its caption back.
  • Tidied up the Settings menu.
  • The homepage has a sharper picture of Holtgrove and a cleaner trailer.
  • On phones the inventory now slides in from a handle, so the game gets the whole screen. Swipe or tap the handle to open it; its tabs fit one row and everything in it scrolls.
  • Taps are precise now: tap a tree or a fishing spot itself to start; tapping the ground beside it just walks, and a new label shows what you're doing.

  • Anglers on the pier now each get their own seat in the three nooks, so nobody sits in anyone's lap. When all three seats are taken, extra anglers wait by a seat, shown as a small +N, and take the next seat that frees up.
  • Added music for Holtgrove, the bank and the pond.
  • Added a Settings menu (the gear on the game view) with chat options, a chat filter that hides rude words, and the statue's look.
  • The striped awning on Cobblethorn's Stall now shows crisp, clean stripes.
  • The homepage has a fresh new look, with a trailer, screenshots, and everything Idleholt has to offer.
  • Added a roadmap map: follow Idleholt's path from its first day to what's coming next.
  • The fishing pier now curves along the shore.
  • Fixed flickering inside the bank and the vault room: the walls, the stonework and the floor seams now stay steady as the camera moves.
  • Buildings now turn see-through when they stand between the camera and your character: the roof lifts away and the walls fade. Trees in the way now fade completely, trunk included.
  • Other players now walk smoothly instead of stuttering and stopping between steps.
  • Added a wooden fishing pier with fishing spots out over the water. Walk up its ramp to fish from the planks.
  • Added Time played to the Skills tab: one line with your time online, your AFK time while your character kept working, and the total.
  • Resize the chat however you like: drag its corner or edge, on a computer or a phone. It remembers your size.
  • Emoji now show in chat, and a new emoji button sits beside the chat box. Each emoji counts as one character.
  • Messages sent quickly now simply appear in chat one after another, with no waiting indicator. Send too many at once and you get one gentle reminder to slow down.
  • Added a Skills guide page with XP tables and unlocks.
  • Chat messages sent too quickly are now delivered after a short delay instead of disappearing.
  • Recent public chat now stays visible after you refresh the page.
  • Chat now shows lowercase letters and normal punctuation.
  • Links are now automatically removed from public chat to keep players safe.
  • Added this changelog page, and a roadmap at the bottom of the homepage.

  • The chat can now be made bigger, and it remembers your tab and size.

  • Added new outfits for each body type.

  • Added a sideways layout for phones held in landscape, with panels that fold away.
  • The game is now sized for phones held upright, with bigger buttons and easier-to-read text.
  • Added a welcome-back card that shows what your character did while you were away.
  • Idleholt is now online only: your progress is kept safe on the server, and the game pauses until it can reconnect.
  • Fixed a progress-saving bug that could reset some players' experience.
  • Added a calm notice when saving is having trouble. It keeps retrying on its own.
  • Anglers now sit in a striped beach chair on the jetty.

  • Added a new homepage, plus privacy and terms pages. The game now lives at idleholt.com/play.
  • Added player accounts: sign in with an email link or with Google, and your progress is saved online.
  • Holtgrove is now shared: see other players walking the woods with you.
